DIY Light Tent

Image
OK, you probably wouldn't want to take lots of photographs like the one above, but you'd amazed at how professional the results turn out using a homemade lightbox. The above photo is my first and only try at the technique. A lightbox is simple to make (15 minutes) and made from a cardboard box and a few sheets of paper. If it turns out not to be outdoor photgraphy weather this weekend, why not try building one and experimenting. Shipbreaking

Some amazing photos of shipbreaking by Edward Burtynsky. I especially like the ones that have people working on the ships, such as this one . See the photos here . [via Bifurcated Rivets ]. Categories: photo , web

Family Photos

Image
For some reason most of the photos I have taken of my family end up being deleted, because I feel the photos really don't do them justice. My family photos are mostly shots of people awkwardly posing with fixed grins. I did try taking candid shots; This didn't work either, with some terrible frozen facial expressions. A very good article on Exposure blog, gives the following advice: Fill the frame Compose your shot Light is your best friend Natural light We can tell if they aren't comfortable Read more about how to take Family Pictures that Don't Suck [via Lifehacker ] Categories: tutorial , web

Flying with the birds

Image
This photo was taken from Newburyport (Massachusetts) waterfront on Sunday. A couple of people were feeding the seagulls with big hunks of bread. The seagulls feeding method was to swoop down and pick up the bread in mid-air. The birds got to within a few feet, giving a perfect photo opportunity. Categories: myPhotos , photo

Winter Landscapes

Image
Winter can be looked upon as a dull and un-interesting season as far as landscape photography is concerned. With muted colors, no foliage and bad light, it is not surprising that winter landscape photographs are often restricted to ones with snow. Each season has it's own character. Winter offers many qualities that other seasons don't: Trees without leaves resemble sculptures. Woodland floors have more light, allowing more sunlight and contrasting shadows to reach the forest floor. The sun is much lower in the sky (see photo below) offering different lighting of the landscape, with longer shadows. Leafless trees don't obscure views. There are fewer people around to get in the way (this one is for people like me, who don't really want to see people in a 'natural' landscape. So get out there, don't wait until spring! Bad Passport Photos

Image
Do you cringe each time you hand your passport to be checked by immigration? Do you cringe even more when the person at passport control smiles a knowing "this photo of you is hilarious" smile? Imagine if you could take you photo at home (or even take 100s and select the best). Well now you can at epassportphoto.com [via Digital Photography Weblog ] Categories: web

Clashing colors

Image
I suppose it is an obvious thing to say, that some colors go well together whilst others clash. Quite often the photographer will be concentrating on the main subject a the shot and the camera settings, neglecting to compose photos by thinking how the colors work together in the frame. On the right is a color wheel. The idea is that colors that are close to each other will be in harmony, whilst colors that are opposite or near opposite each other will create drama and tension. Using this idea of 'clashing' or 'harmonious' colors, it is possible to compose shots where the atmosphere of the photo is entirely created by the colors in the shot. Red and green are near opposites on the color wheel Green and yellow are close to each other on the color wheel Obviously, I am over simplifying color theory , but bearing these simple rules in mind can help to add drama or create harmony in your photos. Winter colour

Image
This photo illustrates the colourful photographic possibilities, even in winter. Here, the wintry, grey sky emphasizes colors in things that we probably wouldn't notice in summer. This photo was taken on my visit to England in December, 2006 (taken in Lymington, Hampshire). Categories: myPhotos , photo

A free, portable digital darkroom

Image
Wouldn't it be great, when away from your home PC, to able to carry around your latest photos and the software to view and edit them. For example, you may wish to edit your photos at work, but not have the means to install software on your office PC. I carry around with me a 512 Mb USB flash drive. This allows me to view, edit and upload photos to my favorite photo sharing service from any PC. The software runs directly on the USB drive, so you are not installing software or making any changes to the PC you are using. Here's how to create your own portable digital darkroom: I recommend at least a 512Mb USB Drive, such as this one . The software will install on a 256Mb drive, but you won't have much space left to store photos. Install the following software on the drive (instructions are taken from portablefreeware.com ) : PhotoFiltre . Download from here . PhotoFiltre is a freeware photo editor. Users of Photoshop or Elements will be very at home using this software. It wi...
